Ogham Spindle Whorl from Buckquoy, Birsay

This spindle whorl has an inscription scratched onto it. It reads ‘BENDACCTANIML’, an ancient Irish Christian formula meaning ‘a blessing on the soul of L’. In modern Scottish Gaelic it is ‘beannachd anam L’.
